Like golf, “plein air” painting is for people who love to be outdoors and enjoy a challenge. But unlike golf, is an outlet for developing your artistic ability. The goal isn’t to create a masterpiece, it’s to capture that special moment in time.

Eric Rhoads, publisher of Plein Air Magazine, declared that the “plein air” painting movement is “the new golf.” Plein air is a French term that literally means “outdoors,” and it was used in France in the late 19th century to describe the Impressionists, who went outdoors to paint en plein air. The term stuck, and today there are an estimated 250,000 artists around the globe who enjoy painting outside.

Due to requests and easing of restrictions, I have decided to restart my plein air workshops this year. However, I will be having just one workshop in September. We will be painting on the South Shore (Lunenburg, Blue Rocks, Mahone Bay, Green Bay, Petite Rivière, LaHave … and more).

My workshops offer a good balance between friendly interchange and education. They will be a relaxed, yet informative experience for all.
Days will include demonstrations, personal instruction, exercises, encouragement and positive critiques for personal growth.

Subjects Covered:

• Various ways to start a painting (inside out/outside in/three values, etc.).
• Making quick field sketches to determine compositions.
• Making preliminary value sketches to capture a strong design.
• Types of light and value planes (angles and consequent values).
• Understanding cool and warm colours.
• Simplifying detail for a more powerful statement.
• Understanding edges (soft, hard and lost).
• Creating atmospheric perspective and the illusion of distance.

If you are a beginning painter or a studio painter, you are in for a great experience!
