La Mer: New Work by Sanna Rahola and Douglas Drdul
La Mer – New Work by Sanna Rahola and Douglas Drdul
The Prow Gallery, Halifax, NS — Nova Scotia artists Sanna Rahola and Douglas Drdul invite you to immerse yourself in La Mer, a new exhibition celebrating the sea’s boundless beauty, power, and interconnectedness. Featuring approximately 18 new works, this collaborative show explores the textures, rhythms, and mysteries of marine life and coastal landscapes through textile and wood artistry.
The title La Mer—meaning “the sea” in French—echoes its linguistic siblings: mare in Latin, meri in Finnish. “No matter where we are—whether beside the Red Sea, the Mediterranean, Minas Basin, Crystal Crescent Beach, the Baltic or the Pacific—we are connected by the sea,” says Sanna. “It’s an awe-inspiring habitat, a source of oxygen, healing, and surprise. It demands respect.”
Each piece in the exhibition reflects details of what the artists experience within and around the sea. From the highest tides in the world at their doorstep to the quiet shimmer of Mediterranean light, La Mer captures the emotional and ecological resonance of oceanic life.
The works are crafted using a blend of wildcrafted and found materials alongside fine textiles and woods, including merino wool, silk, linen, mohair, black walnut, mapa aspan burl, and rock maple.
