In “STRONG ROOTS, Drawings and Thoughts in Praise of Trees” Linda Johns weaves together narrative prose and black and white drawings to highlight the remarkable resilience and brilliance of trees as “elemental caregivers”, tending to four areas of special interest: l) Roots, 2) Boles and Boughs, 3) Setbacks and 4) Renewal. All of the forty-three drawings in the book are of actual trees and land forms recorded on-site in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland with an index of specific locations provided.

The book is a tribute not just to Maritime species but trees found everywhere across Canada, a perspective provided in the Foreward by John and Janet Foster, distinguished Canadian cinematographer/photographer team, with a 40-year legacy filming, writing and producing nature and wildlife programs for CBC, TVOntario NHK Japan and the Discovery Channel. The Fosters became friends with Johns in 1999 when producing a four-part documentary series for the Discovery Channel, entitled “Winter Tales from Nova Scotia” one of which was about Johns and her art.

Linda Johns is a well-known professional writer and artist, as well as a naturalist. Her art practice has always been informed by daily drawing outdoors and her own nature notes and journals, which also serve as inspiration for her many books of prose and poetry. “Strong Roots” is Johns’ seventeenth published book, written from the solitude of rural Nova Scotia.
